The purpose of the Bachelor of Liberal Studies degree is to provide students with a solid multidisciplinary preparation in the Humanities, Natural Sciences, Social Sciences and the Arts, subsequently allowing them to pursue careers in education, business, government, and other such fields. Students who successfully complete the liberal studies major will be able to communicate effectively, both in oral and written communications,exhibit skills in critical thinking and problem solving, and imbue critical thinking with ethical thought. Liberal studies provides students with opportunities for a more extensive study of the liberal arts and sciences and for a broader understanding of various academic fields of interest.
A student who seeks to be awarded a degree such as B.A. in Liberal Studies, should undertake a study of subjects including, but not limited to: literature and language studies; mathematics; visual and performing arts; physical education; history and social sciences; science; and human development.
This flexible major allows the student to combine coursework in the humanities, social sciences, religious studies, philosophy, mathematics and science. Through this broad-based study, the student develops the skills and characteristics that are the hallmark of the liberally educated person which include critical thinking and analytical skills, written and oral communication skills, the ability to reason and to solve problems, the ability to view life from more than one perspective and to adjust to new situations. These skills and characteristics, so important in a rapidly changing society and economy, can be put to use in business, industry, government or education.
