Helen Blanchard

Helen Augusta Blanchard (25 October 1840, Portland, Maine – 1922, United States) was known for her numerous inventions dealing with sewing machines. Blanchard was born into a wealthy Maine ship owner's family. After her father died she moved to Boston, Massachusetts and patented several inventions relating to sewing machines.

In 1881 Blanchard established the Blanchard Over-seam Machine Company of Philadelphia, and continued to patent inventions until suffering a stroke in 1916. [Lance Day and Ian McNeil, "Biographical Dictionary of the History of Technology", 1995]
