- Ik-Hwan Bae
Ik-Hwan Bae, concert violinist, was born in
Seoul, Korea and made his professional debut with theSeoul Philharmonic Orchestra at the age of 12. He attended New York City's prestigious Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Performing Arts, graduating in 1976. While there, Bae also studied withIvan Galamian at Juilliard's Pre-School. He went on to graduate fromJuilliard four years later. His performances in recitals and concerto concerts has taken him to most of the major cities inEurope ,Asia and theUnited States .Career
In 1985, Ik-Hwan Bae received the gold medal at the
Queen Elisabeth Music Competition inBrussels and also was a prize winner at theARD International Music Competition in Munich in 1984. In 1986, he was a recipient of the Solo Recitalist Grant from theNational Endowment for the Arts .As an enthusiastic participant in many of the world's best chamber music festivals, he has been seen everywhere from Seoul to Alaska. He was an artistic director of the Bargemusic Ltd., one of the leading presenters of chamber music in
New York City , for thirteen years until 1995.His most recent project is as a concertmaster of the Hwaum Chamber Orchestra in
Korea , which is a conductor-less string orchestra. He has led them toKrakow, Poland andPuerto Rico at theCasals Festival .Much sought after as a pedagogue, Bae has taught at the Peabody Institute of
Johns Hopkins University , theManhattan School of Music , and theKorean National Institute for the Arts . Every year he gives master classes worldwide. Presently, Ik-Hwan Bae is on the faculty of Indiana University's music department, and has recorded for theRCA ,ECM ,Delos , andKoch labels. Bae has also been a jury member of the Munich ARD competition inGermany , theCarl Nielsen International Violin Competition inDenmark , and theBenjamin Britten International Violin Competition inLondon .
