Howard Washington Odum (born
May 24 ,1884 nearBethlehem, Georgia ; diedNovember 8 ,1954 inChapel Hill, North Carolina ) was an American sociologist. He graduated fromEmory University and received his first doctorate, in psychology, atClark University . He received his second doctorate, in sociology, atColumbia University . He went on to served as Assistant Director of Research for PresidentHerbert Hoover 's Research Committee on Social Trends, wrote three novels, was President of theAmerican Sociological Association in 1930, and was also founding member of the Southern Regional Council.
