Edward Covey

Edward Covey

Edward Covey (1800s). Edward Covey was an early 19th-century American slaveholder. He is described by Frederick Douglass in My Bondage and My Freedom (published in 1855) as a "a first rate hand at breaking young negroes". In 1833, Douglass was rented to Covey for a year in order to break the teenage slave's spirit.

Covey's former home, Mount Misery in Maryland (located in the town of St. Michaels), was purchased in 2003 by United States Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld.
