John R. Adler, Jr. (born 1954) is a Professor of
Neurosurgery atStanford University who specializes in the treatment of brain and spinaltumors . His primary area of academic interest involves the development of minimally invasive computerized tools for surgery. In this regard he is the father of the rapidly emerging field of image-guided irradiation. As a pioneer in the field ofradiosurgery , he holds 7 United States patents and is an author on more than 150 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters. In 1991, Professor Adler foundedAccuray , a company which manufactures theCyberknife , an image-guided radiosurgical instrument that noninvasively ablates tumors almost anywhere in the body. He served asChief Executive Officer of Accuray from 1999 to 2002, and the Chief Medical Officer up until 2007. He presently serves as a member of the Accuray Board of Direcors.John Adler was born in
Yonkers, New York . He graduated fromHarvard College in 1976, andHarvard Medical School in 1980. From 1980 to 1987 he did his neurosurgical residency at Harvard and inStockholm, Sweden , where he worked with ProfessorLars Leksell .
