History
Between 1983 and 1987 New Caney's varsity football team lost 43 consecutive games. The team's losing streak came to an end after a dramatic 13-6 win over St. Thomas High School [3] in a non-district game. New Caney High School continued to suffer from a dearth of varsity football victories throughout the late 1980s, posting a combined record of 1-69 from 1983-1989. During this period, the Eagles were outscored 2,637-435; moreover, the team scored a mere 6 points during the entire 1984 season.[4].
During the mid-1990s, the New Caney High School varsity football program underwent a notable turnaround, making the playoffs multiple times. Due in large part to a much needed change in the coaching staff and moving into the 4A division where the Eagles could better compete. In addition, the New Caney High School Ninth Grade Annex was opened.
In 2008 the University Interscholastic League switched New Caney from District 21 4A to District 14 5A. New Caney High School also received a ranking of 121 out of 145 in an assessment released by the Houston Chronicle rating high schools in the Houston area [5]. In an article announcing the winner of the newspaper's inaugural Chronicle Cup, which ranked local high schools in terms of athletic achievement, New Caney High School was listed as "bringing up the rear" [6].
New Caney High School's Academic Decathlon team has won its regional competition every year since 1996 and has consistently achieved success at the state competition for medium schools. At the 2008 state competition, the team defeated longtime rival Friendswood High School and finished second to Seven Lakes High School after scoring 47,332 points. Both the New Caney and Seven Lakes teams broke the previous state scoring record for medium schools.
The Broadcast Journalism program became part of the Channel One (1) television network in 2003 and produced a segment seen by 9.5 million students dealing with the 2004 presidential election. In 2006 New Caney won seven UIL Broadcast Journalism awards at the state competition held at The University of Texas, three were first place medals. New Caney finished the 2007-2008 school year as the top producing high school in the United States on Teachertube, with over 100 journalism productions. During that same year, teachers voted three New Caney Journalism podcasts to the top twenty in the country. These productions were called Eagle Vision.
New Caney ISD has started construction on a new high school named Porter High School that is scheduled to open in the Fall 2010.
Feeder patterns
Elementary school attendance zones that feed into New Caney High include those of, Aikin, New Caney, and Valley Ranch, and a portion of Porter Elementary attendance zone.[7][8] Because all 6th grade residents of NCISD attend the New Caney 6th Grade Campus for 6th grade, that campus feeds into Porter High School.[9] All residents zoned to Keefer Crossing Middle School are also zoned to Porter High School.[7][10]
