History

First century CE stone pillars, and ruins of the Buddhist "Lumbini" vihara are found here. The site is listed in the reports of the archeological commissioner [Somasiri, Annual reports, 1983, and Epigraphica Z. ] .Kilinochchi is 100 km south of the once flourishing Nallur city off the coast of the Jaffna Lagoon.

Demography

Economy

Kilinochchi is one of the major agrarian cultivation destinations in the island from the pre-historic times. Iranamadu (Ranamaduva) Tank, Kanakampikai Kulam (Pond), and Kilinochchi Kulam are the major irrigation source for paddy and various other cultivations.

Transport

Kilnochchi has a defunct station on the Sri Lanka Government Railway system.
