Jerry Hayes (journalist)

Jerry Hayes (journalist)

Jerry Hayes is a television journalist at WHNT in Huntsville, Alabama. He anchors the 6 and 10pm evening newscasts and is also the managing editor. He joined WHNT in March 1979.

Career

Jerry was born in Nashville, Tennessee. While working on his college degree at Middle Tennessee State University, he landed an internship at WTVF, the CBS affiliate in Nashville. After graduation, Jerry was hired as a videotape editor in the News Department. In the fall of 1978, he moved to Huntsville where he was hired by WHNT as a reporter. Within a couple of weeks he began producing and anchoring the weekend newscasts. After working as 10 o'clock co-anchor and then noon anchor, he was moved to the 6 and 10 anchor spot in November 1983. In the last several years, he has also added 5 o'clock anchor to his responsibilities.

Jerry has won numerous awards during his journalistic career, the most recent being the Associated Press Television Award for Best News Anchor in Alabama in 2005.

Travels

Jerry has literally been around the world gathering stories for NewsChannel 19. He's reported from the White House and brought stories home from as far away as St. Petersburg, Russia. Some of his favorite memories of stories he's covered include getting to know the boys in the band Alabama (band). He was the first television reporter to interview members of the country music group.

Personal life

Hayes is said to love country music, partly due to his roots in Nashville. He is also obsessive compulsive and his cleaning habits have earned him the name of "Jerry Hughes" (like Howard Hughes) by his co-workers. Each day when he comes to work he wipes down his desk, phone and keyboard with anti-bacterial tissues, believing that they are covered with billions of germs.

When not on the air at work, he loves spending time with his two daughters. He also enjoys playing golf and working in his yard at home. He also loves to fish and spend time on the water. Jerry loves SEC football, and somehow manages to pull for both Alabama and Tennessee.
