- South Bay Conservatory
South Bay Conservatory, or SBC, is a non-profit organization started in
1966 to provide music instruction to students residing in theLos Angeles Area. Since its inception, SBC has grown to include dance, drama, and voice training with over 30 professional performers. While these classes go on and off from time to time, SBC mainly focuses on their Fall, Spring, and Summer musical theatre productions.SBC's Play Formats
The Conservatory offers 2 simultaneous productions at a time. One is for ages 5-12, while the other is for ages 8-18. Since the beginning of these productions, some directors/choreographers/musical directors have come and gone, while others have had a long history with SBC. Currently, Larry Watts is director for the older group's productions, accompanied by Tim Battle, musical director. Stefani Pogue is director of the younger age, with Heather Denney as choreographer.
Performers pay a tuition, since they are not only enrolling to perform a play, but to be trained in musical theatre. All who audition are given roles, but quality still decides between lead and chorus. Also, SBC provides scholarships based on need and merit.
Recent Troubles
SBC recently had a setback in the beginning of 2006, when the facility it used for classes was demolished. Because of this, SBC has suspended all private and group classes until further notice. Until then, the organization has maintained its ability to put on full musicals for the South Bay.
