Holy Family Elementary School (Port Allen, LA)
- Holy Family Elementary School (Port Allen, LA)
Holy Family School in Port Allen, Louisiana, opened on September 5, 1949 under the sponsorship of Holy Family Parish. Father Domsdorf, the pastor, welcomed the first principal, Sister Mary Bernadette MSC along with other Marianite Sisters, Sr. Jane Frances and Sr. Paulinus. Grades K-3 had an opening enrollment of 146 students with a tuition of $4.00 per month.
The school quickly grew. In 1950 the fourth and fifth grades were added and in 1951 the sixth grade. Seventh and eighth grades joined the rest of the elementary grades in 1952 and 1953 with a total enrollment of 345 students.
1961 was another growing year when the new building which now houses grades four through eight was opened. Further renovations took place in 1990 when a new library was built. Since then a science lab, an art studio, a computer lab, and a music studio have been added. Soon there will be further expansion as Holy Family Parish embarks upon a capital fundraising campaign.
The close of the 2006-07 school year brought with it the end of the administration of the Marianites of Holy Cross. Sr. Joel, the last of the Marianites principals at HFS, passed the torch to Mrs. Nikki Landry at the beginning of the 2007-08 school year.
Mrs. Landry is the first lay principal since the opening of the school in 1949. Holy Family School is staffed by certified educators. It employs an Assistant Principal, a Guidance Counselor, Religion Coordinator, Librarian, Resource Teachers, Art Teacher, PE Teacher, Computer Teachers and Music Teacher. Five full-time aides assist in the library and primary classrooms.
