Lex Humphries

Lex Humphries

Lex Humphries (born August 22, 1936 in New York City; died July 11, 1994) was a jazz drummer. He worked with two musicians known for mixing world music with jazz; Sun Ra and Yusef Lateef. As a member of Sun Ra's "Arkestra" he appeared in the film Space Is the Place. [ [http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0072195/fullcredits IMDB] ] He also worked with Donald Byrd on a few albums and played with Dizzy Gillespie in 1959 on the album Have Trumpet Will Excite.

He might be best known for work on two well-known jazz albums: The first is Giant Steps by John Coltrane, but he was not in the 1960 album. The renditions he and Cedar Walton recorded with Coltrane were instead released as alternate tracks in 1974. He can also be heard on Eastern Sounds by Yusef Lateef.
