International Daily News

"International Daily News" (zh-cp|c=國際日報|p=guójì rìbào) is a Taiwanese-owned major Chinese-language newspaper in North America and Indonesia. Launched in 1981 in the city of Monterey Park, California. It is sold in several major Chinatowns.

In comparison to its competitor World Journal, International Daily News was much more popular among mainland Chinese immigrants in North America due to its much less hostile attitude toward mainland China/Chinese (this is until the mid-/late- 1990's, when World Journal significantly changed its hostile attitude toward the People's Republic of China). Mrs. Li Yapin (李亚频), a Chinese American and the owner/publisher of International Daily News was jailed by the Taiwanese government under the Kuomintang regime on September 17, 1985 during her visit to Taiwan, charged with spreading propaganda for the Communist government, partially because the paper used simplified Chinese characters adopted by the Communist regime. Mrs. Li Yapin (李亚频) was eventually released on September 26, 1985 due to strong American pressure.

Presently, the International Daily is the North American publisher of two other newspapers published by the Chinese government-People's Daily and Wenhui Newspaper. The International Daily is widely considered to be a pro-Beijing publication. The paper generally transplants the Chinese government's official positions on various domestic and foreign issues to its articles and editorials.
