The Harish-Chandra Research Institute (HRI) is a research institution[1], named after the mathematician Harish-Chandra, located in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh, India. It is an autonomous institute, funded by the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) of the Government of India. It has over 30 faculty members.

HRI is one of the leading research institutes in India for research in theoretical physics and mathematics.

History

HRI was founded in 1966, on an endowment from the B.S. Mehta Trust, Calcutta. It was known as the Mehta Research Institute (MRI) until October, 2001. MRI was initially managed by B.N. Prasad and, later, by S.R. Sinha, from the University of Allahabad. The first official Director of the Institute was P.L. Bhatnagar who took charge from S. R. Sinha.

After P. L. Bhatnagar, the stewardship of the Institute returned to S. R. Sinha, who was the Director until January 1983. S.S. Shrikhande of University of Mumbai joined the Institute as the next Director. During his tenure, a discussion was initiated with the DAE which ultimately culminated in the Government of Uttar Pradesh agreeing to provide land for the Institute campus, and the DAE promising financial support.

In 1992, the Institute acquired about 66 acres (270,000 m2) of land in Jhusi, Allahabad and H.S. Mani took over as the Director from S.S. Shrikande. Currently, Amitava Raychaudhuri is the Director of this Institute.
