Thelwall is a small suburban village in Warrington, North Cheshire, England, close to the Lymm junction of the M6.

Geography

It borders the villages of Lymm and Grappenhall, and (across the Manchester Ship Canal), Latchford. It is also one of the two principal settlements of Grappenhall and Thelwall civil parish. According to the 2001 census, the population of the entire civil parish was 9,377. Thelwall is best known for the Thelwall Viaduct, which carries the M6 Motorway across Manchester Ship Canal which opened in July 1963 and another in 1995. The village is situated between this canal and the Bridgewater Canal, being on the east-west A56 and B5157. To the east between the village and the M6 is Statham.

Politics

As part of the Warrington South constituency, Thelwall is currently represented in the House of Commons by Helen Southworth MP. It also has representatives on Warrington Borough Council and [http://www.grappenhallandthelwallpc.org.uk Grappenhall and Thelwall Parish Council] .

Education

The village of Thelwall contains two schools, the first is Thelwall Infant School which is aimed at children in Key Stages 0 (Reception) and 1 (Years 1 and 2). In it's Ofsted inspection in July 2008, the infant school was judged to be 'outstanding'. There is a pre-school at Thelwall Parish Hall.

Culture

During the Summer month's, Thelwall host their very own Rose Queen. An event that the residents are very proud of as it has now been running for over 50 years. The events host's the biggest float parade in the areas, which features a different theme every year. The whole community come together and make the event very special. Scouts, Schools and Residents come very year rain or shine and make the event better an better. Each year it has gradually been getting bigger and better. Thelwall is plagued with many stories of ghost's, as many of the old buildings remain in the area. Many stories of ghost's are found in the older area of Thelwall. Many of the sightings are usually from the Local Pub: "the Little Manor". However their has been stories of witches at the old white house with the well on the outskirts of Thelwall.Fact|date=September 2008

History

A fortified city was established at Thelwall in 923 during the reign of King Edward the Elder, which is mentioned in two very early sources, including the Anglo Saxon Chronicle:

Kynge Edwarde made a cite at Thelewall in [th] e northe parte of [th] e Marches, nye the water of Mersee, where he put a certeyne knyghtes. Earthwork remains of a embankment, possibly part of these fortifications, has been found on the grounds of Chaigeley School. These remains are an English Heritage National Monument.
