Scott Stanzel

Scott Michael Stanzel, (born January 15, 1973), a political appointee in the administration of George W. Bush. On October 16, 2006, White House Press Secretary Tony Snow named the Iowa native to a position as Deputy Press Secretary.

Personal

Stanzel is the son of Ned and Chelon Stanzel, and was raised in Sac City, Iowa, where his father raised cattle and hogs.

He graduated from Iowa State University in 1995. In 2005, Stanzel received the Outstanding Young Alumni Award from the Iowa State University Alumni Association. In 2007, he was elected to the ISU Alumni Association Board of Directors. Stanzel also serves on the Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication Advisory Council at Iowa State University.

Stanzel is a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity and was initiated Bond 1482 in the Iowa Gamma chapter at Iowa State University.

Career

Stanzel started his political career in the Iowa caucuses for the Senator Bob Dole presidential campaign. After that assignment, Stanzel joined Rep. Jim Ross Lightfoot's campaign for the U.S. Senate. Next, he worked for U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley (R-IA) in Washington, DC.

In 1999, Stanzel joined the Bush for President campaign in Iowa. Once Bush won the Iowa Caucuses, Stanzel became a media coordinator during the general election in the Bush for President headquarters in Austin, Texas. After serving on the Florida recount team, Stanzel became a Spokesman in the Office of Media Affairs at the White House, dealing with the regional press.

In 2004, he became the Bush-Cheney '04 campaign press secretary. After the campaign, he joined Microsoft as a Senior Public Affairs Manager until his White House appointment to work in Tony Snow's organization.

Controversies

White House Email Accounts

In April 2007, Stanzel worked to defend the White House in the face of criticism that it had used email accounts at the Republican National Committee for official business and that these emails were improperly deleted, despite the President Records Act.
