May 13 ,1875 –May 24 ,1961 ) was a U.S.political figure . He served asMayor of Los Angeles between 1921 and 1929. Prior to serving as mayor, he was a police officer and lawyer.He was known to be the figurehead for the infamous Crawford
organized crime syndicate, which essentially ruled Los Angeles politics between 1921 and 1928. The mob, which included such figures as Charlie Crawford, Guy "Stringbean" McAfee and Marco Albori, ranprostitution andgambling rackets throughoutSouthern California .
