1729 -1807 ) was aSoto Zen priest and 11th abbot ofEiheiji inFukui, Japan who greatly deemphasized the use of koans in the Soto school. According toSteven Heine , "Gento's efforts to 'purify' his lineage of foreign influence seems to have contributed toRyōkan 's decision to leave Entsūji and choose a life of wandering. [Heine, 245] He also edited major editions of works byDogen , including "Eihei Shingi" and the "Shōbōgenzō ".Leighton, 22]Notes
