John Goodchild Dow (
May 6 ,1905 -March 11 ,2003 ) was a Democratic member of theUnited States House of Representatives fromNew York .He was born in
New York City . He graduated fromHarvard University in 1927 and received a master's degree fromColumbia University in 1937. He was a director ofcivil defense inGrand View, New York from 1950 until 1964. He was elected to Congress in 1964 defeating 18-year incumbentKatharine St. George and served fromJanuary 3 ,1965 untilJanuary 3 ,1969 . He unsuccessfully ran for re-election againstMartin B. McKneally in 1968 but in 1970 won the seat back from McKneally and served in Congress a second time fromJanuary 3 ,1971 untilJanuary 3 ,1973 . He was redistricted intoNew York's 26th congressional district after the 1970 United States Census and lost a re-election bid againstBenjamin A. Gilman . He was a delegate to the1968 Democratic National Convention . He unsuccessfully ran for Congress again in 1974,1982 and finally in 1990. He died inSuffern, New York .ources
