20th century

* 1914 – The Algoma Central and Hudson Bay Railway, building northward from Sault Ste. Marie, opens its northernmost section between Oba and Hearst, Ontario.
* 1925 – The 111th Street station on New York City Subway's IRT Flushing Line opens.
* 1988 – Rio Grande Industries, parent company of Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad, purchases Southern Pacific Railroad; the post-merger company adopts the Southern Pacific name due to brand recognition with shippers.
