* 1887 – Cotton Belt Railroad predecessor Paragould and Buffalo Island Railway, in Arkansas, is incorporated.
* 1887 – The New York and Northern Railway (a predecessor name for the New York and Putnam Railroad) emerges from reorganization after foreclosure the previous July.
* 1897 – The Chicago 'L' begins using the downtown loop.
20th century
* 1933 – London, Midland and Scottish Railway 4-6-0 "Royal Scot" number 6152 (of the LMS Royal Scot Class locomotives) departs the Century of Progress Exhibition in Chicago, bound for Vancouver, British Columbia.
* 1962 – Colorado and Southern Railroad 2-8-0 number 641 pulls the last steam locomotive-operated regular daily service revenue train on a standard gauge railroad in the United States when it pulls a train from Leadville to Climax, Colorado.
* 1987 – Soo Line Railroad sells 2,002 miles (3,222 km) of track to the newly formed Wisconsin Central.
