San Francisco ballot measures
- San Francisco ballot measures
Many laws, official policies, and alterations to the city charter in San Francisco are decided by direct voter referendum rather than by the city's legislative body, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors.
Notable propositions
2006
*Proposition G seeks to require mandatory preapproval of the city Planning Commission before "formula retail" stores can open any new branch citywide, in the interests of preserving the local character of San Francisco. Proposition G would extend existing similar ordinances that already apply to certain neighborhoods to the entire city. A "formula retail" store is defined as any retail store with 11 or more locations in the United States. The proposition would not ban such stores, but require public notice and hearings before they would be permitted to open.
*Proposition J seeks to make it the official city policy to call for the impeachment of United States President George W. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney due to their alleged commission of high crimes and misdemeanors such as lying about nonexistent weapons of mass destruction as a pretext for invading Iraq and spying on American citizens without a warrant. It was proposed jointly by four of the eleven Supervisors on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, and officially supported by six.
