The somoni ( _tg. cомонӣ, ISO 4217 code: TJS) is the currency of Tajikistan. It is subdivided into 100 diram ( _tg. дирам). The currency is named after the father of the Tajik nation, Ismail Samani (also spelled Ismoil Somoni).

History

The somoni was introduced on October 30, 2000, [cite web | author= National Bank of Tajikistan | url= http://www.nbt.tj/en/?c=3&id=3 | title= Banknotes and coins | accessdate=2007-05-19] it replaced the Tajikistani ruble, at the rate of 1 somoni = 1000 rubles.

#"Standard Catalog of World Coins: 1901-present, 31st ed." states that the composition for 5, 10, and 20 diram is brass clad steel, while the Central Bank states "bi-metal (cupro-zinc-steel-cupro-zinc)".
