Perian, advertised as "the swiss-army knife for QuickTime," is an open source plug-in which enables QuickTime to play several popular video formats not supported natively by QuickTime on Mac OS Xcite web | title=Perian - A swiss-army knife for QuickTime | url=http://perian.org/ | accessdate=2006-10-14 ] . It is largely based on the FFmpeg project, as it uses libavcodec and libavformat. It also uses liba52 and libmatroska.
