Soqota (woreda)

Soqota is one of the 105 woredas in the Amhara Region of Ethiopia. Located on the eastern escarpment of the Ethiopian highlands in the Wag Hemra Zone, Soqota is bordered on the south by the Semien Wollo Zone, on the southwest by Dehana, on the northwest by the Tekezé River which separates it from Zikuala, and on the north and east by the Tigray Region. Towns in Soqota include Nirak and Soqota.

Based on figures published by the Central Statistical Agency in 2005, this woreda has an estimated total population of 178,789, of whom 89,883 were males and 88,906 were females; 15,374 or 8.60% of its population are urban dwellers, which is greater than the Zone average of 5.4%. With an estimated area of 3,173.60 square kilometers, Soqota has an estimated population density of 56.3 people per square kilometer, which is greater than the Zone average of 45.1.
