Soqota is one of the 105
woreda s in theAmhara Region ofEthiopia . Located on the eastern escarpment of theEthiopian highlands in theWag Hemra Zone , Soqota is bordered on the south by theSemien Wollo Zone , on the southwest byDehana , on the northwest by theTekezé River which separates it fromZikuala , and on the north and east by theTigray Region . Towns in Soqota includeNirak andSoqota .Based on figures published by the Central Statistical Agency in 2005, this woreda has an estimated total population of 178,789, of whom 89,883 were males and 88,906 were females; 15,374 or 8.60% of its population are urban dwellers, which is greater than the Zone average of 5.4%. With an estimated area of 3,173.60 square kilometers, Soqota has an estimated population density of 56.3 people per square kilometer, which is greater than the Zone average of 45.1.
