ISTEP

ISTEP+ (often referred to simply as ISTEP) stands for Indiana Statewide Testing for Educational Progress-Plus and is an annual testing regimen designed by the Indiana Department of Education to encourage students to master basic language and science skills, particularly reading, writing and mathematics. All students in grades 3 through 10 take the ISTEP+ each fall and spring, with language and math covered in each test and science covered in grades 5 and 7. Graduation Qualifying Exam

Successfully completing the final (grade 10) ISTEP+ Graduation Qualifying Exam (GQE) is necessary to graduate from an Indiana public high school. This test covers English/Language Arts and Mathematics. If a student does not pass this test, they are placed in remediation classes the following semester for the subject(s) that they failed, and they will be in these classes until the semester after they pass both sections. Students can retake the exam during their junior and senior year of high school.

Testing Date

In October 2007, the test was moved from fall to spring, beginning with the 2009–10 year school year. It is hoped that the move will save Indiana over $2 million annually.
