- Camp Madawaska
Camp Madawaska is a camp in
Nipissing District, Ontario located near the entrance toAlgonquin Provincial Park . History
Camp Madawaska was owned by
Edward Curtis Smith 's family. Edward kept a 4-inch Clark portabletelescope at the camp. Soon afterWorld War II , the Smiths sold the camp, along with the telescope, to Garfield Weston, owner of the Canadian company,George Weston Limited . When Weston died, he bequeathed the camp to theSalvation Army .For the following years, it was used as a camp for inner-city kids for most of the
summer and was also rented for various retreats. Due to the large number of Salvation Army camps in Ontario, fewer and fewer camps were held at Camp Madawaska. When the camp was sold in 2005, the sole remaining camp wasCamp Rainbow , which was transferred toCamp Newport .tructure
The grounds include 32000
acre s (130 km²) of land, muchforest andwildlife , ninelake s, and several lodges and cabins. Common activities includeswimming ,camping , biking, andhiking .
