Steve Aponavicius

Steve Aponavicius

Steve Aponavicius (nicknamed Sid Vicious by his teammates) is an American kicker for Boston College's football program. A left-footed soccer convert, Aponavicius made his first start of his career against Virginia Tech on October 12, 2006 and successfully kicked two field goals. Aponavicius became the team's kicker after the the suspension of regular kicker Ryan Ohliger after a bar fight.

Aponavicius never played competitive football before coming to Boston College. Growing up, Aponavicius played baseball and soccer in Easton, Pennsylvania, a city known for its high school football. He was an avid member of the "Rover Nation" student cheering section at Cottingham Stadium, where the Easton Area High School Red Rovers played football.

As a freshman at Boston College in fall of 2005, Aponavicius began kicking field goals inside Alumni Stadium where he was spotted by a Graduate Assistant to the program. The Graduate Assistant asked Aponavicius if he would like to try out for the team. A few days later he began practicing with the team. His sophomore year, when streaky Junior place kicker Ryan Ohliger was suspended from the team for an incident at a local bar, Aponavicius was given the chance to show what he could do in front of a packed crowd of 44,500 versus Virginia Tech.

He ended his dream-like season in 2006 with a game-winning 37-yard field goal to defeat Navy in the Meineke Car Care Bowl. Aponavicius finished the season as the team's leading point scorer, ammasing 48 points. He was also named to the All-ACC Academic Team.

Aponavicius is of Lithuanian ancestry.
