Mulcahy attended IT Tallaght, whom he represented in soccer. While there he was twice chosen for the Irish Colleges International team, in 2004/05 and 2005/06. He journeyed with the team to places like America and Cyprus where he was part of the team that enjoyed a good win over a professional Cypriot side in January 2004 [ [http://www.rte.ie/sport/2004/0131/colleges.html Irish Colleges wrap up tour with win] → www.rte.ie] .
Before signing for Kildare County for the 2006 season [ [http://www.kildarecountyfc.com/news/news-details.asp?NewsID=667 Mulcahy signs] → www.kildarecountyfc.com] , Mulcahy plied his trade at Kilkenny City in 2004 and the now defunct Dublin City in 2005. He made 24 league appearances for County including once scoring from the penalty spot against Finn Harps at
Finn Park .Mulcahy was released by County at the end of the 2006 season and he signed for Waterford United for the 2007 season. Mulcahy spent only one season at Waterford before he linked up with his former Dublin City boss

He was largely utilised as an impact substitute at Shelbourne where he impressed to help the Reds to the summit of First Division table during the first half of the 2008 season. During his short spell at theTolka Park club he made 2 starts and 8 substitute appearances in all competitions.Outside of football, Alan was formerly Deputy President Education Officer of IT Tallaght Students Union.
