USSR in 1939-1991 (with interrupted period of German occupation in 1941 - 1944). During 1350-1772 and 1919-1939 it was part ofPoland and during 1772-1918 ofAustria (Austro-Hungarian empire ). Kozowa, Polish name for Kozowa was used before 1939 when town was under Polish and Austrian dominion. Kozova is administrative center ofKozivskyi Raion with about 5.000 inhabitants (in town itself), mostly local GalicianUkrainians . There were also about 5.000 people in 1939 in Kozova, including many Poles and Jews living there, not now though, since about 1.000Jews from Kozova were deported toBelzec death camp onSeptember 21 ,1942 . Later other 1.000 KozovaJews were shot byGermans in April1943 . And in June1943 , 400 moreJews were executed byNazis at theHolocaust time. All are buried in mass grave in Kozova. So now the remaining population is exclusively Ukrainian. FewPoles ,Jews andRussians are also, but these one can count by fingers in Kozova today. There are few nice churches (
