island inMiyagi Prefecture ,Japan , and one of the Three Holy Places ofTōhoku . It lies in thePacific Ocean off theOshika Peninsula .Koganeyama Shrine was founded in 740, after gold was discovered on the island, and attracts a large number of pilgrims.
