John E. Márquez is a city council member of the city of
Richmond, California .He was the first Latino on the council and remained the only one for 14 years. He was born in
Taos, New Mexico and later attendedBishop Union High School when his family moved toBishop, California . He has served in theUnited States Army as an MP and was sent to Lebanon during the conflict there, and was awarded theAmerican Expeditionary Service Medal . He ran for reelection in the 2006 city council race, and is now the vice mayor of Richmond. He was the 2006Contra Costa County [county] Hispanic [person] of the Year.
