Carl Alfred Meier

Carl Alfred Meier (April 19, 1905 – 1995) was a Swiss psychiatrist, Jungian Psychologist and scholar. He became the first president of the C. G. Jung Institute in Zürich. As successor to Carl Jung, he held the Chair of Honorary Professor of Psychology at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in 1949. Later, co-founded the Clinic and Research Center for Jungian Psychology, Zürichberg.

Professor Meier was born in Schaffhausen, Switzerland. In 1924 he entered University of Zürich. In the winter semester of 1927, Meier traveled to Paris to study at the Medical Faculty of the University of Paris. Later, in1928, he traveled to Vienna to study at the Psychiatric Clinic of the University of Vienna, which is called Steinhof, and to attend the lectures of Julius Wagner-Jauregg. He was also interested in the works of Sigmund Freud and later has been invited by a colleague at Steinhof to attend the Wednesday seminars which were given by Freud. 1931 he begins the study of psychiatry under H.W. Maier at Burghölzli.
