Alwartirunagari is a small village next to
Srivaikuntam on the Tirunelveli - Tiruchendur Highway,Tamil Nadu , southernIndia . Its about 31 km fromTirunelveli and 29 km fromTiruchendur , on the banks of the riverTamirabarani . It's the birth place of one of the 12Alwar s of Vaishnavites, namely, Nammalwar. Also, it is one of theNavatirupati Kshetra s of South Tamil Nadu. Known to be aGuru Kshethram , the presiding deity isSri Adhinathar . The temple has a very old tamarind tree, under which, Nammalwar, as an infant, crawled and sat in yogasana. This tree can be see to this day.Actually the Perumal of Thirikurungudi was born as Nammalwar was born as the son of (until then childless)
Kari Maharaja ofAppankoil , a small hamlet on the other side of the river Tamirabarani. But Nammalwar never cried or drank anything after birth.
