Alaje is one of the 36
woreda s in theTigray Region ofEthiopia . Part of theDebubawi Zone , Alaje is bordered on the south byEndamehoni , on the west by theAmhara Region , on the northwest by Samre, on the northeast byHintalo Wajirat , and on the east byRaya Azebo . Towns in Alaje includeAdi Shenu ,Chelena and Dela.The highest point in this woreda, as well as the Debubawi Zone, is Mount
Amba Alagi . This prominence was the scene of two battles, the first was a significant defeat of the Italians during theFirst Italo–Ethiopian War . The second was one of the last actions of theEast African Campaign , and ended with the capture of the Duke of Aosta, the governor ofItalian East Africa , as well as one of the last Italian strongholds.Based on figures published by the Central Statistical Agency in 2005, this woreda has an estimated total population of 113,020, of whom 58,265 were males and 54,755 were females; 10,927 or 9.67% of its population are urban dwellers, which is less than the Zone average of 29.1%. With an estimated area of 755.63 square kilometers, Alaje has an estimated population density of 149.6 people per square kilometer, which is greater than the Zone average of 133.18.
