woreda s in theTigray Region ofEthiopia . Part of theMehakelegnaw Zone , Abergele is bordered on the south and west by theAmhara Region , then by theTekezé River on the west, on the north byKola Tembien , on the east byDegua Tembien and on the southeast by the Debubawi (Southern) Zone. Towns in Abergele includeAgbe andYechila .Based on figures published by the Central Statistical Agency in 2005, this woreda has an estimated total population of 77,979, of whom 38,779 were males and 39,200 were females; 4,075 or 5.23% of its population are urban dwellers, which is less than the Zone average of 23.9%. With an estimated area of 1,350.95 square kilometers, Abergele has an estimated population density of 57.7 people per square kilometer, which is less than the Zone average of 123.96. Francisco Álvares notes had been part ofBegemder , but was divided from it a few years before he arrived in Ethiopia in1520 . About a century later,Pedro Páez recorded that Abergele paid only a little less tribute than neighboringTembien .
