Sergey Borisovich Stechkin (Russian: Сергей Борисович Стечкин) (
6 September ,1920 ,Moscow –22 November ,1995 ,Moscow ) was a prominent Russian mathematician who worked intheory of functions (especially inapproximation theory ) andnumber theory .His father (
Boris S. Stechkin ) was a Sovietturbojet engine designer, academician. His great uncle, N.Ye. Zhukovsky, was the founding father of modern aero- andhydrodynamics . His maternal grandfather, N.A. Shilov, was a notable chemist.Stechkin studied mathematics in
Moscow State University , he was a student of D.E. Menshov. Stechkin received his Ph.D. in 1948, his thesis was titled “On the order of best approximations of continuous functions”.Later he worked as a mathematician at
Steklov Institute of Mathematics in Moscow.He was the founder and first director of the department of the Institute inYekaterinburg . Later this department became the Institute of mathematics and mechanics of the Ural branch of theRussian Academy of Sciences .Stechkin founded, and, for more than 20 years, headed as the editor-in-chief the mathematical journal “Mathematical Notes” (Russian: Математические заметки) [http://springerlink.metapress.com/content/1573-8876/] .
Stechkin was a professor of mathematics in
