The Audi 4000 quattro (sometimes written as 4KQ, 4000CSQ or 4KCSQ) was a passenger car, manufactured by Audi of Germany for the 1984 through 1987 model years.

The 4000 quattro was only manufactured as a quattro permanent four-wheel drive model. "quattro" is Audi's trademark for their four-wheel drive system. There were lock-up controls for the center and rear differentials. 1984 and 1985 US models and all Canadian models were badged "4000S", 1986 and 1987 US models were badged "4000CS".

Engine and transmission

The 4000 quattro had a CIS-E fuel-injected 2.22 litre inline 5-cylinder, cast iron block petrol engine, with an alloy head, and belt-driven single overhead camshaft (SOHC). The bore was auto mm|81|2, and the stroke was auto mm|86.4|2. The displacement was auto cc|2226 (136 cu.in). The compression ratio was 8.5:1. The horsepower was convert|115|hp|kW at 5500 rpm, and the torque was Auto ft.lbf|126|0 at 3000 rpm.

The only transmission offered on the 4000S/CS was a close-ratio 5-speed manual ("standard"/"stick-shift"). An automatic transmission was not available.

The 4000 quattro was a car with "multiple personalities". It was a 4-door, 5-passenger luxury European sedan, although it had the spirit of a sports car (in the engine, transmission, and handling). In addition, it had lockable center and rear differentials, giving it four wheel drive capabilities.

On the exterior, the 4000 quattro was designedFact|date=July 2008 to look like a luxury sedan. The door handles have stainless steel inserts to match the body moulding, and clearcoat metallic paint was an option.

The interior was designedFact|date=July 2008 to have "sport" appointments. Although the seats were plush and comfortable, the dash area was "sport" style: tab-rocker component switches, red instrument lighting, sport steering wheel, "et cetera".

The 4000 quattro had several standard features which were advanced and/or fancy in the mid 1980s - such as power side mirrors with defoggers, cruise control with resume function, air conditioning, and power windows.

The 4000 quattro had a few stylish touches - one in particular being the word "quattro" written on the rear windshield in defroster wire. The word was visible from the outside, and it also appeared in the rear-view mirror (reading in the appropriate direction obviously, due to the double-reversal). This feature was continued with the later Audi 80/90 quattro models.
