Jon is asleep in his bed one morning when Odie wakes him up. After briefly engaging with Odie in some small talk, Jon overhears the
television in the living room and realizes that he had left it on all night. He and Odie run into the living room and find Garfield sitting in an easy chair, having been apparently hypnotized by watching TV all night. Just before Jon shuts the TV off, he sees an advertisement by Binky the Clown stating that he visits people’s homes for their birthdays. Jon then puts Garfield to bed and he and Odie leave the house to go shopping.Garfield’s slumber is initially interrupted by a leaky kitchen faucet. After corking the faucet, he goes back to sleep but is then awoken by calliope music. He opens the front door just as Binky is pulling up to the house in his car. He asks Garfield if he has the home of Mrs. Edna Fogarty, because he is there to wish her a happy 97th birthday, to which Garfield remarks "If he does, Edna won't make 98". He then tells Binky no, but Binky ignores him and begins to repeatedly sing a birthday song. Garfield closes the door in his face in the middle of the song, only for Binky to knock on the door and then continue the song. Garfield then closes the door again and tries to go back to sleep.
Binky then sneaks into the house through a window as a
one-man band and plays an instrumental of the birthday song; then he squirts Garfield in the face with a trickflower . Garfield then throws him out of the house through the window he came in before closing the window and locking it. Binky then comes into the house through the chimney disguised as “Santa Clown”, and gives Garfield a present: an Odie doll (You can see "Beware of the Pie in your face actually a splut, not the traditional "To Garfield from Binky"). Binky then gives him a peace offering of chocolate-covered Tabasco candy. Garfield runs to the kitchen faucet to get water, but the cork he’d placed in it earlier has stopped it up. When he finally gets the cork loose, a large spray of water emerges and carries Binky out the front door.Garfield decides that Binky won’t go away because he doesn’t realize he’s at the wrong house. Binky defiantly comes back to meet Garfield dressed up as an elderly woman. Binky thinks he is Edna Fogarty, so he sings the birthday song once, gives Garfield a load of presents, and leaves. Garfield drops the presents and then tries to go back to sleep when Jon and Odie return home. Jon tells Garfield that they bought him some birthday presents, and Garfield forgot it was his birthday because he was so tired. Jon then tells Garfield that he arranged a special birthday surprise: Binky. Garfield is horrified and runs out of the house.
He runs far away and climbs to the top of a
mountain . Deciding that he finally can get some peace and quiet, he goes to sleep, only to be awoken by Binky. Binky continuously sings the birthday song.Quotes
Binky: Neither
rain , norsnow , nor gloom ofnight --nor cat with baddisposition --will stay "this" clown from his appointed rounds.Binky: HEEEEEEEEEYYYYY, CAT! I'm Binky the clown. Is this the home of Mrs. Edna Fogarty? Garfield: No. Binky: I'm here to wish her a HAPPY 97TH BIRTHDAY! Garfield: If he does, Edna won't make 98.
Binky: (singing) Happy Birthday! Happy Birthday! Whoopee-doo! Whoopee-doo! May your day be pleasant! Open up your present! Just for You! Just for You!
Garfield: People who sing like that should be dragged out into the street and shot.
