Pohay or Pohe is the Maharashtrian variant of fast food, served as a quick snack at tea time, which is virtually anytime in India but more often than not at
breakfast in many households.Its origins are unknown. There are variants of this dish in the north, where the preparations tend to be sweet. The Maharashtrian pohay variety tends to be spicy.Pohay are composed of flattened, processed rice, roasted with chilies, onions, mustard and cumin seeds and curry leaves (called Kudi-pattha). It is a high carbohydrate, low fat quick meal that can be made in minutes.Pohay is easily available in most tea shops (amrutul-lyas) and other restaurants.
