Born in
Bisbee, Arizona , Hughes received his education at the "Los Angeles Polytechnic School". He sought a career as an actor early in life, and his clean-cut appearance and ability soon gained him recognition. His first role as leading man was oppositeMary Pickford in "Tess of the Storm Country". Other notable early roles included "Love Never Dies" oppositeMadge Bellamy , and "The Lost World" withWallace Beery andBessie Love . Hughes starred oppositeMary Astor eight times and wasColleen Moore 's leading man in five of her most popular films. He made the transition to sound smoothly, and worked as an actor through the late 1930's, including a role withJohn Barrymore in the 1930 augmented remake version of "The Sea Beast ", "Moby Dick".Family
