Dutch Grand Masters darts

The Zuiderduin Dutch Grand Masters is a darts tournament held in the Netherlands until 2005. It was held in December and was traditionally the last British Darts Organisation event before the annual World Championship. The 2006 Masters was postponed until March 2007 but subsequently cancelled due to lack of sponsorship [ [http://www.dartswdf.com/aa_darts/calendar.html] WDF tournament calendar] - but the tournament venue, Zuiderduin Hotel, stepped in as its sponsor so the event returned in December 2007.

Tournament Format

The top 20 BDO ranked players received automatic qualification for the event in 2005 and they were joined by 4 wildcard players.

It started with eight groups of three players and the player who loses the first match starts the second match against the third player. Every group winner goes to the quarter finals, where it becomes a straight knock-out event.

Tournament Name

The tournament had gone through several changes in identity as a result of sponsorship deals. It was originally known as the Dutch Grand Masters, but the tournament ceased between 1997 and 1999. In 2000, it returned as the "European Grand Masters", then became the "Doeland Grand Masters" in 2001 and the "Leendesk Masters" for one year in 2005. No official reason was given by the BDO / WDF for the cancellation of the 2006 event, other than an announcement on their web site that the tournament was to revert to its title "Dutch Grand Masters" and would be held 16-18 March, 2007. The event was later cancelled, then revived as the Zuiderduin Masters for 2007 when the hotel which staged the event stepped in as sponsors.

Tournament Venue

The tournament had been held at the Hotel Zuiderduin in Egmond aan Zee until the 2005 Masters. The plans for 2007 (which were later aborted) were to hold the Dutch Grand Masters in Rosmalen, but it has returned to Egmond.
