The Zimbabwean Independence Medal,1980 was instituted for award to those who were involved in the Zimbabwean independence commemorations in some way.

Obverse of the medal

The obverse of the medal depicts a Zimbabwe bird rising from the fire.

Reverse of the medal

The reverse of the medal depicts the Zimbabwe Ruins in Matabeleland with the date of Zimbabwe's independence, 17 April 1980.

The medal is sometimes found on its own, but it is occasionally found in a pair with the British Rhodesia Medal.
