Since the Maldives became a republic on
11 November 1968 , the Maldivian Government has instituted an indigenous honours system.Since1982 , when the Maldives returned to its membership of the Commonwealth, the Maldivian honours system has been reclassified as a British Commonwealth honours system instead of a foreign one.
