The old name of Kantharalak was "
Mueang " Uthumphon Phisai, controlled by Mueang Khukhan. The central office was located Ban Kan Tuat, Tambon Uthumphon Phisai. The present office district is located at Tambon Nam Om.In 1939 the district was renamed from Nam Om to Kantharalak. Kanthon (กันทร) means cave, Lak (ลักษ์/ลักขะ) means sign.

The district is subdivided into 20 subdistricts ("
tambon "), which are further subdivided into 273 villages ("muban ").Kantharalak itself is a town ("thesaban mueang ") and covers parts of the "tambon" Nam Om and Nong Ya Lat.
