Johann Joachim Kändler (born
June 15 ,1706 inFischbach nearDresden ,Germany ; diedMay 18 ,1775 inMeißen , Germany) was the most importantmodelleur of theMeissen porcelain manufacture.After apprenticing at the sculptor Thomae in Dresden, Kändler became assistant of
Johann Jakob Kirchner at Meissen porcelain, and succeeded him as "modelmaster" in 1733 when Kirchner resigned. His models were heavy onrococo style, leading a porcelain trend of the day.Kändler was appointed court sculptor by
Augustus II the Strong in 1731. He became known for his animal sculptures including one ofClara the rhinoceros .After his death in 1775, Kändler was succeeded by his assistants
