John McEnery (politician)
- John McEnery (politician)
).
In the election of 1872 John McEnery, a Democrat, faced Republican William Pitt Kellogg. Sitting Governor Henry Clay Warmoth, a Republican, supported McEnery because Warmoth opposed the Republican Party faction loyal to President U. S. Grant, who supported Kellogg.
Governor Warmoth had appointed the State Returning Board which administered elections. A rival board endorsed Kellog; Warmoth was impeached and removed for stealing the election. The Lieutenant Governor, a black Republican, P. B. S. Pinchback, became Governor for the last 35 days of Warmoth's term.
McEnery and his friends formed a rump legislature in New Orleans, and, supported by a White Citizen's League, called for taking up arms against Kellogg's government, as illegal. Grant intervened, sending in troops to restore order and seat Kellogg.
His family's identification with white supremacy assisted McEnery's brother, Samuel McEnery, in being elected Lieutenant Governor in 1880; he succeeded to the Governorship after Louis Wiltz died, and retained it until 1888; Samuel was then refused re-election for being himself notoriously corrupt.
