They allow themselves to be immersed in pain and depression, while they try to listen to a voice that tries to help them break free of this pain.
Chart performance
"Pain" has become the band's biggest hit to date. It reached #1 on the Modern Rock chart (the second single titled "Pain" to do such, the first by Jimmy Eat World) for 4 consecutive weeks, becoming their biggest hit on that chart so far. On the Mainstream Rock chart, it reached #1 and stayed there for an impressive 13 consecutive weeks. It has also hit #44 on the US Hot 100, becoming their first single to chart in the top 50 of the Hot 100. Pain can be described as most as a song about angry sex.
"Pain" also held the number one spot on many Canadian rock stations for weeks, and was the number one most requested song 10 weeks in a row.
"Pain" reached #1 on Much Music's Top 100 Countdown.
The song was also featured on an episode on "
Grey's Anatomy ", "", and "Ghost Whisperer "."Pain" was re-released to pop radio on
June 3 ,2008 . This could possibly be due the result of the success of "Never Too Late ".Music Video
The video, directed by
Tony Petrossian , features the band playing the song in what looks to be an abandoned mansion, and it also features shots of troubled youths who are lip-syncing to the song. At the end of the song, everyone (youths and the band members alike) is shown to be wearing a red "X" on the back of their necks.Versions
