After a win in the Peach Bowl over highly favored cfb link|year=2000|team=Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets|school=Georgia Institute of Technology|title=Georgia Tech, Nick Saban and the LSU Tigers were determined to have an even better season than before. In 2001, LSU went 10-3 and won the SEC West and represented the division in the SEC Championship Game for the first time. After a 31-20 upset of favored Tennessee, LSU played in the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans, Louisiana, and defeated yet another favorite, the University of Illinois, 47-34.

Prominent Players

LaBrandon Toefield was a running back for LSU that year. Rohan Davey was the team leader and the starting quarterback. He also won MVP in the Sugar Bowl that year. Josh Reed and Michael Clayton were active on the receiving end of the ball. On the Defensive end of the ball, the prominent players were Damien James, Ryan Clark, and Trev Faulkand Robert Royal.Josh Booty assisted Rohan Davey in the quarterback position.
