Fred Teeven (born August 5, 1958 in Haarlem, Noord-Holland) is a Dutch politician for the liberal People's Party for Freedom and Democracy ("VVD") and former public prosecutor.

As prosecutor, Teeven was known as a "crimefighter", since he has led many investigations into organised crime. Teeven was involved in the prosecutions of Desi Bouterse, Mink Kok, Johan Verhoek, and Willem Holleeder. He is known to make deals with criminals in order to get evidence to prosecute individuals higher up in the criminal hierarchy.

Political career

In 2002, Teeven succeeded Pim Fortuyn as lijsttrekker of Leefbaar Nederland. From May 16, 2002 to January 30, 2003 Teeven was the parliamentary leader of Leefbaar Nederland in the Dutch Lower House. After he learned that he would not be lijsttrekker in the 2003 elections, he quit the party and returned to his old position as public prosecutor.

In 2006, Teeven announced his return to politics, this time for the People's Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD). For the Dutch general election, 2006, Teeven is 6th on the candidate list for the VVD, and was elected into parliament on November 30, 2006.
